[edit] Chapter 1

Would it never stop raining? Jane looked out of the tent at the misty hillside, feeling the damp in her clothes, her hair, the bedding, everything. Perhaps she should pack up and work her way down the rocky path to somewhere warm and dry. But it would be risky.

So much for hiding out where no-one could see her. Beaten by the weather: the thought gave her a surge of energy and she reached behind her for her waterproofs, deciding to step out, go up the hill and see whether there was sun above the layer of clouds that were drifting damply past.

It was an effort pulling on the damp jacket and trousers in the little tent. By the time she scrambled out Jane was hot and cross, but stretching up and breathing the cool air she smiled and laughed at herself for sulking away in the tent. It wasn't so bad out here after all. And yes, the breeze was clearing the clouds, even though the rain still came damply down on her hair. But she was running out of food. Should she risk the trip to the village or adventure further up the narrow path?
