Des has been a Chain smoker and heavy drinker since the age of fourteen, He knows he does not have that long left to live and is attempting to live life to the fullest between now and the enevitable end. He takes solace in knowing that he has lived a morally acceptable life when possible, but remembers bitterly that when he was 20 he was sentenced to 4 years for the vehicular manslaughhter of a transexual prostitute in the ealy hours of a late night. He is reminded of this shameful incident by his best mate Troy, who often theorises aloud that it was not the first time the two had met.

After serving two years for the crime, he was paroled on strict conditions,namely that he report to his parole officer on a daily basis. He has not been seen since the prison gates closed behind him a little over fifteen years ago.
