Elizabeth (Liz) Monroe Sandiego is the estranged wife of Carlo, she has filed for divorce due to his abusive behaviour against her; the case in uncontested, however the decree-absolute is still a number of months away. She is waiting for the day that she regains her freedom. She is 38 years old, born March 20th 1968. She now has short auburn hair which she dyes; her natural colour is blonde. She started dying her hair after Carlo returned from his last tour of duty; his abusive behaviour often leaving blood caked in her long, beautiful blonde hair. She found auburn would hide this; would cover up scabs and bruises on her head. Keeping the abuse she suffered as much of a secret as possible.

She has reverted to using her maiden name of Monroe since leaving Carlo. She doesn't like being called Liz, but Carlo always called her that after the military. He had a way of saying it that chilled her to the bone. It was if he was saying "Liz, I'm going to beat you to a bloody pulp" when he uttered the three letter word.

Carlo suspected her of having affairs with men during his military service and afterwards; none of which was true. She remained loyal and faithful to him throughout their marriage. He accused her of spending money irrationally, although his heavy drinking, and the early stages of his drug addiction were the real reasons for the lack of money. She had thought of leaving him before the accident, although never actually did. He'd always promise he'd "get better" or "change" but for all the apologies he made, it only got worse.

Eventually a lifelong friend, Sandy Roseburg saw the abuse and dragged Elizabeth kicking and screaming away from him to a shelter for abused women; she was there for 3 months before starting her life afresh, filing for divorce. She is currently living out of state, her exact whereabouts being unknown to Carlo.
